Abstract

Coffee is the first food product and the second consumer good traded worldwide. However, the waste (pulp) it produces requires special attention in terms of its management in order to prevent the resulting environmental consequences. This study conducted in the northern part of the Kabare chiefdom in South Kivu demonstrated that the coffee waste (pulp) produced in the RAEK and SCAK washing stations have immeasurable environmental consequences, mainly the rejections of bad odors (29%) of respondents and the proliferation of mosquitoes (21%). This is due to the fact that there is non defined rational mechanism for the management of this waste (74% of our respondents maintain that this waste is thrown away pell-mell). For the rational management of coffee waste (pulp), our respondents suggest composting (43%) and the creation of common bins between washing stations (24%).
