The speedy development of fast charging infrastructure is profoundly affecting electric vehicle (EV) power electronics' performance and design. As charging becomes faster to address higher consumer demand for reduced charging time, power electronic components such as inverters, converters, and onboard chargers are being forced to change to handle higher voltage, increased thermal loading, as well as efficiency concerns. This work explores the impact of fast charging on power electronics design, highlighting key challenges in the areas of thermal management, electromagnetic interference, and energy conversion efficiency. New developments aimed at resolving these challenges are also discussed, including wide bandgap semiconductors (SiC & GaN), emerging converter topologies, and smart thermal management strategies. Case studies of prominent EV manufacturers and charging networks provide perspective on real-world applications and progress. The paper concludes with a description of future trends in ultra-fast charging, AI-optimized power electronics, and grid integration. By addressing these challenges and leveraging the force of technological innovation, the EV industry can improve charging efficiency, prolong battery life, and improve overall system reliability.
